The Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, under the leadership of Justice Abimbola Awogboro, on April 12, 2024, handed Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, a six-month jail term for defacing Naira notes. This verdict stemmed from his arraignment on April 5, 2024, on four counts related to the mutilation of Naira notes totaling N490,000.

The charges detailed instances where Okuneye tampered with Naira notes during social events, leading to his admission of guilt. During the trial, S.I. Sulaiman, the prosecution counsel, requested that the investigating officer, ASE I Bolaji Temitope Aje, provide a summary of the case. Aje explained how the EFCC, acting on intelligence, monitored individuals engaged in Naira abuse at social gatherings and online platforms.

Evidence presented included videos of Okuneye spraying money at various events, leading to his voluntary cooperation with the EFCC. Despite pleas for leniency from Okuneye and his lawyer, Justice Awogboro, after careful consideration, deemed the act of Naira mutilation a national disgrace and sentenced him to six months' imprisonment without the option of a fine, aiming to deter similar behavior.

The judge's decision reflects the gravity of Naira abuse and its detrimental impact on the nation's reputation, emphasizing the need to curb such practices to preserve the integrity of the currency.
